The Denver Post’s “Year in Photography 2012” app showcases the work of some of the best photographers in the world as they cover news events, newsmakers and memorable moments from across the globe. The book features nearly 300 pictures from photojournalists at The Denver Post, The Associated Press, Getty Images, AFP and Reuters.

The stunning array of photos takes readers inside Colorado’s highest impact stories, including the Aurora theater shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58 others and the epic Waldo Canyon and High Park wildfires that ravaged communities from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. Among the famous and infamous people captured by the lenses of The Post photographers are Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, accused Aurora theater killer James Holmes and Regis Jesuit High School swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin. But it’s not just the dramatic and surreal. There’s the serenity of a mountain snowfall and a blue umbrella and the incongruous sight of cowboys on horseback waving to the USA Pro Challenge cyclists as they speed across South Park under ominous skies. Photographer Joe Amon also goes deep inside the life of a young woman panhandling the streets of Denver to feed her heroin addiction as part of a riveting photo essay a year in the making.

“The Year in Photography 2012” app doesn’t stop there. It provides:

• Interviews with Denver Post photojournalists Craig Walker, RJ Sangosti, Helen Richardson and Joe Amon, who talk about the stories they covered, how they got some of their extraordinary pictures and what kind of advice they’d offer to other photographers.

• Introductions to each of the 11 sections in the book by Denver Post writers, who provide details, insight and context into the photos.

• Section covers that help readers stay organized by topic.

• 289 high-resolution photos with explanatory captions.

In addition to pictures from The Denver Post photo staff, “The Year in Photography 2012” offers visuals from world-renowned photojournalists in sections including Best of the World/Nation, the U.S. Presidential campaign, the violence in the Middle East, the London Olympic games, the world of entertainment, the world of sports and Superstorm Sandy.

This free app is a unique compilation of must-see pictures from one of the most tumultuous years of the 21st Century — 2012.
